Guided shore fishing

There are numerous boats which can be chartered for angling, and they generally take clients out on the many reefs, or sharking in season. In a way this is a shame, because there is potential here for exploration of the mixed and clean ground marks that surround the islands.

It is quite feasible to take a dozen species or more if you target them, such is the proximity of productive marks within 20 minutes cruising of St. Marys harbour.
  Sharking
Blue shark are around from June to October, the main run being small ( up to 50lb ) females.Larger fish are traditionally taken at the beginning and the end of the season, and fish well over 100lb have been landed. Most boats now tag and release their captures, and returns have already been recorded from waters far South. Porbeagles have been taken - small ones - but the larger ones must pass through these waters, though they haven't really been targeted. Sharking is an exciting facet of our sport which can be enhanced by using light gear ( uptiders or 12 - 20lb class tackle ). Take along some gear to bottom fish or float fish for garfish which can run to well over two pounds.

  Reef Marks
The nature of the islands means there is very productive fishing close inshore at many marks. The mainstay of sport is the pollack. Love 'em or loathe 'em they run from a few inches to double figures and pull hard ! Most people use tinsels or feathers, but redgilling is also fun. Rockhoppers be warned - some of the better pollack are caught well within casting distance of the shore. Tinsels also pick up wrasse, mackerel and codling. Bait them with fish or squid to pick up ling as well, especially on some of the deeper outer reefs. Sadly bream are no longer caught in these waters, but we wait in hope. Anchor to add bull huss and conger to your catch.

  Clean ground
There are some great areas for drifting a worm bait across the bottom. You can expect good catches of plaice, dabs, codling, whiting, and gurnards amongst other species. Failing that, baited feathers will pick up the codling, whiting, gurnard, doggies, scad and who knows what else? There are marks that traditionally used to produce prodigious hauls of ray and tope, but who has the time to experiment with all the other fishing available ?
