  Shore
To cover all eventualities on Scilly you could bring several rods, but the following are the choices I suggest. A pair of 13ft rough ground rods will see to the conger, huss and general distance fishing. Team these with SL20s and 30s, Speedmasters or the Penn range. Bring a spinning rod for the mackerel and pollack, preferably one which has a bit of backbone and rated to cast at least 40grms. You can also use this rod for wrassing, though I reckon you'll want a bass rod or similar because the kelp beds are thick in places. Don't forget a rod for the mullet if it's your thing - I'd go for a carp rod rather than a match rod because of the size of some of them which have been lost, and the presence of the wrasse. If you are a fly angler then a 7wt rod will do for the pollack on the quay, and mackerel off the rock marks. Don't forget a decent headlamp if you are going to be night fishing !
  Boat
Boat anglers don't forget your light tackle ! A six to twelve pound class rod will cover the majority of fishing you wish to do as long as its balanced with the right reel and line. Braid is brilliant due to the depth of water around the islands. For the sharks we use anything from twelve to thirty pound gear, but you would still be O.K. with uptiders - and land them just as quickly. Use the same gear for drifting the reefs for decent ling and pollack. If you can persuade a skipper to take you to a wreck and anchor then you may want to break out the heavier gear.
