Report

The weekends racing started for the men on Friday night with the Punchbowl Trophy, the annual Scilly v Truro race from St. Agnes to St. Mary's which was won by the Czar (Tresco/Bryher) crew in the Islander.

The first races on Saturday involved a full line-up of all the competing gigs - over 50 each for both Mens and Ladies!  This represents a major headache for the organisers, especially with a strong North-Easterly blowing the gigs over the line. The races were due to start at St. Agnes but due to the strong wind they raced from just off Carn Near on Tresco.

After these two huge races the crews were split into groups - 4 for the women and 5 for the men. In the next two groups of races on Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning the crews were promoted or relegated according to position and determining their grouping for the finals on Sunday afternoon. All these races were done with rolling starts with about 12 in each heat.  This gave almost thirty races, many of which were really close and hard fought - a real treat for the spectators both on the quay and on the tripper boats.

Between races there was a mad rush to change crews and the gigs converged on Rechabite Slip and Holgates Green on the Strand. The colourful boats (and crews) lined up on the beach produced a beautiful sight.

The Islander is only used for racing against mainland crews and was competed for in races leading up to the Championships.  This year it was the Czar mens crew from Tresco and Bryher and a womens 'supercrew' from St. Mary's fromed just for the Championships.

Latest News

Friday afternoon and things are hotting up. The sun has come out at last and most of the gigs are lined up on Holgates Green. The streets are thronging with people and last night signing and drinking practice was well under way. Some rowing preparation has also been going on, especially by crews who don't usually row in gigs.

The newest of the gigs came out of the boatshed just today and was brought down to Holgates this afternoon.  It is the Storm of Mounts Bay built by Peter Martin on St. Marys. See article.
