Introduction

WELCOME one and all to the ninth annual World Pilot Gig Championships ….. and the first World Water Sports Festival Cornwall ’98.

In this year of international competition and camaraderie we extend a special welcome to our overseas entrants.  The dedication and enthusiasm of ‘they ffurriners’ for a traditional Cornish sport is quite extraordinary.  The international Gig Set continues to grow, and we look forward to entertaining the Australians and the Faroesse in the near future.

The continued growth of the World Championships - this year we expect over 60 gigs - places a great strain on the race officials.  Straightening up 60 gigs on the start line requires a will of iron.  Despite the difficulties involved, we believe that both rowers and spectators thoroughly enjoy the Big Line Ups  at the start of racing on Saturday afternoon, and we intend to keep the tradition going as long as there is sea room left!

There is a programme of races and a map in the centre of this brochure scoreboards will be kept on the Quay and at Holgates Green which acts as a focal point for the weekends’ activities.

The presentation of the trophies will be held on Holgates Green at 4pm on Sunday.  The presentation will be made by the Chairman of the Isles of Scilly Steamship Company, and the Gig Association would like to thank the Company for the tremendous support they have given over the years.  Without their wholehearted commitment this event would not take place.

We hope you enjoy a spectacular weekend of rowing, and a summer of thrilling water sports.
