10th Anniversary of the Islander Back to main gig page |
Welcome
Welcome to the Isles of Scilly & The 1999
World Pilot Gig Championships. This year is the tenth anniversary of the
World Pilot Gig Championships.
Who would have thought back in 1990, when the first event was organised with just 19 gigs competing, that it should have grown with such enthusiasm over the next ten years.
This year there are 60 gigs racing, with competitors coming from Holland, Ireland, and the Faroe Islands as well as crews from Cornwall and Devon.
The Saturday afternoon line up from St. Agnes will be a spectacular event with all these beautiful craft on the start line. Some date back to 1830 and the youngest, Azook, Samphire and Taran, were completed in 1999. For those wishing to follow the progress of their favourite gigs scoreboards will be on the Quay and at Holgates Green where there will also be a refreshments tent.
The Committee of the Isles of Scilly gig Racing Association are indebted to the Gig Racing Clubs of Cornwall and beyond for their continued support of the event. The effort and enthusiasm of their members make this such a special weekend.
I would like to wish all the crews Good Luck - and may we all continue racing into the next century!
