I'm enjoying the programme, Fraser is great, not sure of the chap with the seven stones and that woman from Bryher, she seems obsessed with celebrity, so I'm not surprised to see that she's got in on the act, someone said its because her daughter is working with them, more of Fraser please, he could host his own show, what about Nigels voice? depressing and he keeps asking the same questions.
loving it though! |

almost sounded like the vicar was having it away with pc nicky .....
they must stop hounding her so much though, it's making for squirmy viewing as the narrator asks her about her inside leg measurement. |

| I think its a pile of bxxlocks myself, but the scenic pics of the islands are fantastic, even though it shows what 'some' island life is like, it doesn't show the REAL island life. Do us a favour and leave the woman copper out, its just embarrassing to watch! |

But come on give the love life stuff a miss.
I can see there going to start on the poor chef from the 7 stones next?

Imagine what it's like for Nikki. The questions are intrusive even if there's no telly involved and he wanted none of it.
I thought it quite funny that Hikki (?) was hoping for an average of 25 cases a day, 125 a week, 5k+ a year, that’s an awful lot of mangy beasts.
Maybe it is good for the Islands but it has no perceivable production values and no cliff is too small to hang off.
If it was somewhere else I would never have heard of it and I certainly wouldn't watch.
Still someone's making some money and it’s a pretty good jolly, as long as they don't talk to me. And now there's a book out!! |

I wish they would talk to me!! I could give 'em a few stories to really pull the viewers in, and give a true insight as to what REALLY goes on on the islands, but I think they would have to move the programme to after 9pm!! |

| I'm still enjoying the show but that vicar grrrr! monotone, is doing my head in, in the first series there were cliff's that he often looked like he would throw himself off, but in this one there is no hope, |

Absolutely staggered. I was shocked into silence after reading one particular paragraph in the article in the Daily Mail. Nigel Farrell has written a book. A book that is being serialised in the Mails Saturday Magazine. The timbre and tone throughout is one of a man deeply entrenched in Scillonian life. An antropologist who has interviewed dozens of Scillonians, islanders and new comers. Not a man who has spent two summers flitting backwards and forwards to pick up the latest story.
Don't get me wrong, I enjoy An Island Parish for it's views and "local spotting", I can forgive the glaring inaccuracies and misrepresentation (but then again it's not me being misrepresented) what I object to is the arrogance displayed in the article in the Mail.
"but in the winter there's little else to do but contemplate swapping partners", a humourous throwaway statement which at best portrays us as incapable of entertaining ourselves at anything other than a base level and at worst makes us out to be a bunch of degenerate doggers. I honestly wonder how much of the winter Mr Farrell has spent here. The first two weeks are taken up with families having a break after the Summer season, then you are into preparations for Christmas...Nativity Plays, (both Church!!!! and School), mincepies and monologues, Christmas lights EVERYWHERE, carol singing and then Christmas itself. Following that you have New Year and constant practicing for the award winning pantomime. There are bands playing, events at the club....discos in the bishop, Quizzes in the Atlantic, Line Dancing in the Old Town Inn. Carpet Bowels, Bingo, golf, Darts and Pool every week, the internationally recognised Sunday football league and last but not least constant local involvement in Radio Scilly (.com)......the list does go on but I wish to continue....
Sweeping generalisations in his following comments regarding our feeling towards the mainland simply do not ring true. Certainly, a few may have concerns regarding mainland life, but to say that we "perceive (it) as dominated by greed, crime, noise pollution and overcrowding" and have a "sense of trepidation and sometimes fear when islanders set foot on mainland soil" is an assumption that ropes in the entire islands' community. Of all the people I know over here, young and old, there are just a few who do not view a trip to the mainland for a day or a month as exciting, opportunity laden and a break from the norm.
And then we come to the crux of the article. The paragraph that left me astounded and disgusted.
On NHS breast screening trips made by ladies on a subsidised helicopter ticket. "The clever ones know that when asked to hold their breath for the X-ray, the thing to do is to keep breathing, which results in a smudged image and a recall a few weeks later, along with another £5 ticket."
He insinuates that it is happening on a grand scale. I have never heard of this before and what women would WANT to be recalled for something as serious as a breast scan. The women involved are aged over 50, many see the day trip as an inconvenience and do not wish to trawl around Tescos or Morrisons (as Mr Farrell himself alluded to earlier in his article) but the take up is very good, just maybe Island Ladies are very health conscious and not "clever" (devious!!!!!) as is implied. It is an insult to ALL island ladies
I am naiive of Mr Nigel Farrell, having only met him on a few occasions, his programm is beautifully shot and (on the whole) is a great advert for the islands.
HOWEVER.....
As you may have noticed, the extract in the mail has got me very defensive as I feel it does the islands a disservice and he is truely naiive of real life on the islands.
You may disagree, but on that note, you have the right to reply. |

| Frozen Puffin well said! On Radio Scilly this morning Mr Farrell defended himself by saying that he had no editorial over what was written in the Mail, but even he cannot deny it was taken from his book. As you say he is being advertised as a serious anthropologist and his views on the people of Scilly are being taken as serious, informed and well researched. B******ks. As you rightly say, Mr Farrell flits in and out of Scilly following only the latest "story". There are alot of islanders who would not wish to be in a conversation with him because of fear of their comments becoming the latest quote on the telly. He admitted that his book is intended as a travelogue, not a serious study of island life. Island Parish has done the islands a great service, with it's stunning camera work, feelgood style, and unprecedented advertising of the islands. Mr Farrell and his comments undo this good work. |

I have just listened to Mr Farrell talking to Keri on Radio Scilly about the mail. He seemed quite cross about the whole thing. Claiming that the paper has amplified and distorted out of all proportion what he said in the book. This wouldn't surprise me in the least; after all it is the Daily Mail isn't it. As to the mammogram thing, you would have to be a completely self-righteous pratt not to take advantage of a cheap trip to the mainland, but that's not the same as engineering a cheap trip. Farrell claims this is what the book says. I haven't read it or the mail, but as to any innuendo about swapping partners, can any of you imagine even the merest whiff of infidelity on our fragrant Isles? No never, can't even think of more than 250 instances!
The programme itself continues to lick the the bottom of the barrel of lowest common denominator scented slop, but then again it's doing well, it must be if Fascism Today is serialising it, and that's what really matters isn't it.
And as Nigel said, it's meant to be a travelogue, not a warts an' all expose. So we can watch it again tonight and wander what it's like living in a place like that.

All credit to Farrell. The man has stood up, apologised and even given out his mobile number to anyone who wants to contact him.
It won't change the hurt he has caused, but having the guts to say sorry, rather than get defensive, I think is a positive response.
He may be an A$5e, and a bit of an old smoothy, but I reckon he was just a bit naiive in printing what he did. And again, "HE" is not Island Parish, a great advert for the islands. But he is responsible for it!!!! |

| I agree and it won't be good for scilly to start a hate campaign, there are people jumping on the bandwagon, I think people should just be very careful what they say to him in future or anyone else in the media come to that. |

| Agreed green man, I think we all need to be aware that you don't just have a conversation with anyone connected to the media. It is always potential material whether you realise it or not! |
