30/8/98 - 'Hellstock 98'

17.30 A charity rock festival at Porth Hellick, St. Mary's, featuring local and mainland bands started at 3pm today. These pictures were taken while The Swamp Band were playing. Not many people there yet but lots expected later.

24/5/98 - The things you see from your living room window ! part II

The Band of the Devon and Cornwall Constabulary
They are visiting Scilly over the bank holiday weekend in conjunction with the Round Table of the Isles of Scilly performing a selection of concerts and marching displays and raising money for CLIC (Cancer and Leukemia In Childhood) and the Cornwall Air Ambulance.

The Dartington Morris Dancers are visiting for the bank holiday weekend raising money for breast cancer research.


1/5/98 - Mayday and World Gig Championships

After two days of continuous rain the sun finally came out to bless this years Mayday.


Gigs, rowers and spectators have been arriving all week for the World Championships - more details


24/4/98 - The Gig Racing Season gets underway
 
 
The mainland gigs have begun arriving on the Scillonian and the Gry for the World Championships next weekend. They are being stored on Holgates Green in the meantime.
The gig racing season started last week with the first men's race being held on the 17th and the first women's on the 22nd. This picture was taken during the women's race on Wednesday, looking towards the sun setting over Samson and also shows the Pettifox sailing boat on one of its first outings this season.
 

15/4/98 - Three New Shops Open for the Season on St. Mary's
 
 
Sports Mode (20kb)Sports Mode has been open for a while now by the park selling sports and fishing gear. They used to be through the Post Office arch (see below). The new shop occupies what was John Hamiltons Gallery and for many years before that, Nances shoe shop.
Watch House Gallery (24kb)The Watch House Gallery opened at the begining of April. It sells a range of art and craft items including Jo Proberts original paintings and baskets by Susie Taylor and Nick Lishman (that's me! quick plug - see the Business section!). The gallery, on the Thoroughfare, behind the Steamship offices, was the RNLI gift shop and before that Joe Brownings studio.
Waterloo Second-hand book and print shop (21kb)The Waterloo second-hand book and print shop opened on Good Friday in Well Lane, through the Post Office arch. Until last year the building housed Sports Mode.



4/4/98 - First Sailing of the Scillonian
 
View of Scillonian III from Town Beach (13kb) The Scillonian III made its first crossing of the season on Saturday despite rough conditions which proved to much for the Gry Maritha which was delayed from Friday until Sunday.  More and more people are arriving as the schools break up for the Easter holidays.
Sunset from Rat Island (21kb)  Strong winds, sunshine and showers have produced some beautiful sunsets.
 



23/3/98 - Tripper boats prepare for the season
 
Old Quay, St. Mary's (18kb) View over Porth Mellon (9kb)Launching of the tripper boats has been taking place on St. Mary's all week. Most of the boats' licences run from the 1st of April and the boats will soon be busy as Easter approaches. 
Spring really seems to have arrived, most of the hotels are open and it's getting noticeably busier around the place both with visitors and new hotel staff.


18/3/98 - Work continues on the Wesleyan Chapel, Garrison Lane
 
Wesleyan Chapel (21kb jpg) Contractors have been hard at work converting the derelict former Wesleyan Chapel on Garrison Lane, St. Mary's.  The building is to house the new library, Tourist Information Centre and some Council offices. The library will include the RATIO centre  now being installed in the existing library building at Carn Thomas.  It will provide computer based courses on a variety of subjects and is run from the University of Plymouth.  Watch this space for more details.
