THE BBC RADIO 4 FOOD AND FARMING AWARDS
The Food and Farming Awards began life as The Food Programme Awards, inaugurated by HRH The Prince of Wales in April 2000. Created to celebrate people and organisations that have worked tirelessly to produce and sell good quality food in Britain, they also aim to reward those who work to provide nutritional and satisfying food on a large scale against overwhelming odds, and those who have campaigned to ensure that what is best in our food culture is protected.

THE JUDGES

BEST FOOD PRODUCER
This is a broad category open to both farmers and processors producing anythin from milk or meat to cakes, pies, butter and juices, working to the highest standards with local ingredients.

Andrew Tann was nominated for his dedication to growing British apples with more than 200 varieties in his orchard at Aldham near Colchester in Essex.

Sheila Dillon	Chair of judging panel and presenter of The Food Programme	James Graham breeds Peele's Norfolk Black Turkeys on Rookery Farm at Thuxton in Norfolk from stock originally saved from extinction by his grandfather. Dairy farmers Jeff and Chris Reade and their four sons established Sgroib Ruadh farm in Tobermory on the Isles of Mull eighteen years ago. Since then they have had a profound impact on the food economy of the island with their acclaimed Isle of Mull cheese. BEST FOOD RETAILER Covering every food sales outlet in the country that makes a difference to a local community, from the biggest supermarket to the smallest corner shop. Toby and Louise Tobin-Dougan of St Martin's Bakery on the Isles of Scilly set up shop four years ago to supply islanders with the finest local foods. WINNERS David and Doreen Garson of Flett Butchers in Stromness on Orkney sell local meat, cheeses, and fruit and vegetables, and are highly regarded for the service they offer to the community Tim and Shiela Beswick sell a range of fine foodstuffs, including local meats and cheeses, at Real Meats in Saltburn-by-the-Sea in Cleveland where they have been praised for introducing a new language of food to the community.
John Henderson	owns and magages a small estate of all-grass farms on the western edges of the Pennines, the main enterprises being lamb, beef and milk. He is chairman of the BBC's Rural Affairs Advisory Committee.
Henrietta Green	is author of The Food Lover's Guide to Britain and runs the touring Food Lovers' Fair showcasing foods from small producers around the UK. Winner of the 2000 Campaigner/Educator award and a judge of last year's Food Programme Awards.
Cyrus Todiwala MBE	is a chef and restuaranter and author of Cafe Spice Namaste: Modern Indian Cookery. In 2000 he was awarded an MBE for his services to the hospitality industry.
Bob Kennard	is a farmer and organic meat producer based at Graig Farm near Llandrindod Wells in mid-Wales. He was winner of the 2001 Campaigner/Educator award.
Bill Hamilton	is a freelance consultant with over thirty years experience of the retail trade. He was formerly Director of Public Affairs for Safeway.
Dr Margaret Rayman. B.Sc, D. Phil. (Oxon)	is a specialist in Human Nutrition at the School of Biological Sciences at the University of Surrey in Guildford where she runs courses in Nutritional Medicine.
Derek Cooper OBE	for twenty years the presenter of The Food Programme, and judge of the Derek Cooper Award.
